2019 Quest for the Crown

Join the Sisterhood!

In 1945 a small group put together a winter carnival in Whitehorse.  The original intent of the carnival was to bring Yukoners together to break up the drudgery of the Yukon winter, and celebrate the coming of spring.  With the carnival came the Miss Winter Carnival Contest.

In 1962, after a few years without an official winter festival, another group of business people came together and developed the “Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival” and with it came the Rendezvous Queen Contests.  In 1964 this group formed the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society and ever since then Yukon has hosted what has become the largest winter festival in Canada’s North.

In 2019, we celebrate the many cultures of our territory, while still honouring our traditional roots! The contest has grown so much in its long history.  Originally a contest of ladies based mostly on ticket sales has turned into a fun and exciting competition between a group of ladies that are interested in taking part in this historic event while making new friends, learning new skills, and gaining life stories they will be able to tell for the rest of their lives.

So Why Run For Queen?

You may or may not have heard that the queen contest is all about raffle ticket sales –but that’s simply NOT TRUE.

The Rendezvous Raffle is the single biggest fundraiser the society holds, and without it, we would not be able to produce the park events including the kid’s activities and events which are ALL FREE. So tickets sales ARE part of the contest but there are many other important elements that contribute to a candidate winning a crown.

As part of the contest you will present speeches, model period clothing, serve tea at various events, visit with community supporters, and assist in coordinating or producing queen events.

Here is a breakdown of how the Queen was chosen in 2018:

Specific Events (10% per event) - 50% of Total

Raffle Ticket Sales - 30% of Total

Queen Mum/Queen Auntie - 10% of Total

Office - 10% of Total

So there you have it! The Queen Contest in a nutshell! The long and short of it is that by signing up to be a Quest for the Crown Candidate you are joining a group of nearly 500 women (and one man) over the history of the contest a true sorority of friendship that has now spanned 50+ years and is still going strong!
