2020 Festival Update

Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous are excited to announce that the 2020 Festival weekend will return to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. We are proud to be renewing our partnership with the KDCC and cannot wait to see what this festival will bring.

The 2019 festival was a great indication at how well the mixture of indoor and outdoor space works for a winter festival. Furthermore we are able to play a role in reducing our environmental impact. The City of Whitehorse and the Yukon Government recently declared a climate crisis across the Territory and our move to the KDCC is one of the many steps we are taking to become a greener festival. Without the need to heat a large tent for one full week, we are drastically reducing our carbon emissions. Rendezvous encourages all festival goers to bring reusable dinnerware and drinkware this year and will not be selling plastic single use water bottles. We are also requesting all our food vendors to apply the zero waste rule where possible.

This year, we have faced significant challenges in securing funding and sponsorship. This means some changes to the 2020 line up. You will see a decrease in event prizes; the Rendezvous fun will still exist with prizes donated by local businesses, but without the cash funding we are unable to support the cash prizes. And despite our best efforts, we have not been able to secure a sponsor for the 2020 Pyro Musical (fireworks). With the lack of sponsorship dollars, the society is unable to financially support this much loved part of the festival. Due to the decrease in funding, the Rendezvous Board of Directors have made the hard decision to cancel the event for this festival season. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our anonymous Sponsor who allowed us to put on a spectacular Pyro Musical display for the 2019 festival and we will look to the community for support in future years.

The Coronation is now scheduled to take place during the day so that all can see who will be crowned the Queen or King free of charge. Replacing the Amateur Talent Contest (Superstar) in 2020 will be our all new Hunt for a Headliner competition. This contest is open to all Yukon Based Entertainers and will give the winner a jump start on a career, not unlike Gillian Campbell (who will be joining our team as a Judge for the competition) by providing the winner with a performance contract for the next two festivals!

We are also excited to announce that 2020 has some progressive changes! We will have 2 female contestants entering the Sourdough Sam (Call for the Cup) competition as well as one male candidate in the Quest for the Crown. As a festival that values and promotes inclusivity and diversity, we are proud of these impactful modifications to our traditional events. We would like to thank the contestants, but also the Yukon community for being so supportive.
