Q & A with Gary Bremner

When the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society wanted to bring 1942 to 2012, we enlisted Gary Bremner Photography to not only take the 2012 Queen Candidate Photos, but also the cover photo of the 2012 Souvenir Program… soon the program will be delivered to households across Yukon with an incredible cover.  Here’s how it came to be…

On the set Q and A with cover photographer Gary Bremner

Q.How long have you been taking photographs?

A.About 10 years or so but, I got into it seriously when I moved to the Yukon in 2005.

Q.ahh... an outsider hey?

A.Ya, does it matter?

Q.No... just an observation. What drew you to this project?

A.We thought it would be a good opportunity to work with a Yukon institution and help the Rendezvous Society modernize their look a little bit.

Q.You mentioned “we” whats that about?

A.Gary Bremner Photography is not just me, its a partnership with my lovely fiancé Brianne Meister.

Q.Does she take photos as well?

A.Totally! If we are photographing a wedding or some other kind of event she is the second shooter, and if we are doing a studio shoot or something similar to this shoot, she proofs the images on the computer as they are coming in and helps me with creative direction. She also works with the models to help them with their wardrobes and what-not.

Q.Wow sounds like she does all the work... do you actually do anything?

A.Very funny.... but I would be hooped with out her here..... she keeps everything rolling smooth.

Q.You mentioned weddings, events, and studio.... what kind of other things are you hired to shoot?

A.We shoot a lot of family stuff, like maternity, baby, and portraits... but also shoot architectural, product, corporate, music, and boudoir just to name a few.

Q.Wow that sounds like a lot of stuff... is it normal to shoot so many different things as a photographer?

A.Up here it is. Down south the market allows you to specialize and be very specific in what you shoot. The market isn't big enough here so you have to be fairly diverse.

Q.So you must shoot wildlife and landscape as well then?

A.Not really... If a client requested it I would, but I’d rather leave that up to the other photographers who are doing amazing work in those genres.

Q.You just don't want to hang out in the woods do you?

A.No not really.

Q.See... outsider.

A....

Q. Umm.. ya so what was the plan for this shoot? Why is there only one girl getting photographed at a time?

A. Well what we’re doing here is making a composite: first we shot the car. I lit it from a bunch of different angles to make sure that every piece would have good light. And now we are shooting one girl at a time in her correct position. Later, I will assemble all the different images into one that you will see on the cover of this magazine.

Q. Why go to all that trouble why not just get all the girls in there at once?

A.It’s too tough to try to light every girl correctly at the same time as making sure they all look perfect, the car looks perfect, and nobody’s blinking or anything. We’d be here for 3 days trying to get that done.

Q. Hunh and it will all be just one picture on the cover?

A. Yup, one seamless image.

Q.Weird... well I better let you get back to all that... can I stay and watch?

A.Sure but stay away from the meat platter, thats only for crew.

Q.I gotta go.

The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society thanks Gary Bremner Photography as well as the 2011 Queen Court (Caroline Carter, Cheryl Major, Brycie Klassen, and Denali Ducharme), Mike Collins, and the Yukon Transportation Museum for the incredible cover photo.
